Details :

This course will be given online, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This online course is highly interactive, using Zoom and Miro boards. There will be breaks every hour for 7 minutes, a lunch break, and highly intensive interaction in small groups. The course is designed-for-online and proven to be effective, in a format which is informed by "Teaching from the Back of the Room" principles.

What’s a key insight for senior managers to understand about scaling agile?

You and your company are unique -and I believe that you should retain ownership over your product development lifecycle and methodology, understanding and getting the best advice that you can on the choices that can be made along the way, and adapting the approach to your context. Off-the-shelf frameworks will probably not solve all of your problems for you, but they are useful as references. Among the frameworks, I like LeSS best - it provides 10 principles, 2 frameworks that you can adapt, and myriad guides and experiments with strong advice to help you adapt agile ideas to your own organization. Amongst these ideas is that adoption should be both top-down and bottom-up - meaning that leaders have a critical role in deciding if, and if so, why, they wish to change and improve their organization. In my experience, this leadership is key to being successful.

This course is not a CERTIFIED LeSS training - the current policy of the LeSS Company is not to provide Certified or any official LeSS Executive training online. However, it will is given by a Certified LeSS trainer with much experience in guiding leadership at companies adopting LeSS, and also SAFe, Spotify and custom scaled agile approaches evolved at my client companies, themselves.

Frequently in the organizations that I work with, an organizational design change is considered and implemented with careful consideration of the timing, expected impact and risks. To make lasting changes in your organization, there may well be impacts on group structures, hierarchies, team constitution and formation, roles, positions, processes, and basic policies (such as career path), to create a repurposed and more focussed organization that is flatter, more collaborative and more focused on the rapid delivery of value to customers.

This is a LeSS-friendly, in-depth and interactive course with a very limited participation (15 people maximum), covering the (1) principles of large scale agile, (2) the adoption process, (3) the role of management, and (4) broadly, what a coach, change agent or senior manager needs to know and do to help. The course includes lots of examples from large scale agile adoptions that I have coached, very interactive small group exercises that enhance learning, and a deep dive into systems thinking and becoming familiarity with Causal Loop Diagrams, a great way to model together in deepening understanding of system dynamics (and thus, how to potentially change or keep a system).

There will be extensive Q&A to ensure that we discuss the topics most of interest to the participants.

This course is for senior and executive leadership, usually in mid to very large sized companies, and also for people supporting the leadership in coaching, change agent and manager roles that who need to support a LeSS effort. Since a significant change to your company, whether inspired by LeSS, Nexus, SAFe, Spotify or other approaches, involves both Product Management and R&D (or “business” and “IT”) together, senior representatives of both groups will also want to attend, as well as supportive functions such as the head of HR, whose support and understanding of transitions is essential.

As a special bonus for joining this online training, you will receive a transferable voucher for 1/2 off of a 2nd course given by the same trainer, Greg Hutchings, among those offered in 2021.
