Modern Product Engineering: Design, Data, DevOps, and Beyond

Over the past 9 years at Agoda, I've been experimenting with engineering teams to discover what works and what doesn't at large engineering scale. Agoda is a unique melting pot of global experience - we have former Yandex engineers from Russia, Amazon veterans from America, along with talented people from France, India, Israel, and yes, even some Australians among the rest. This diversity has created a rich repository of shared knowledge about engineering practices that work around the world. In trying to make sense of all these successful and unsuccessful patterns and practices, I stumbled upon a term that I believe perfectly captures what actually works (most of the time): Product Engineering. We will explore Product Engineering, a new and old term, that has its modern roots in Agile methodologies, but encompasses a broader discipline that integrates design thinking, data analytics, experimentation, and technical excellence to build customer-centric products that scale. We will look at how successful companies like Agoda, Netflix, Amazon, and Airbnb use parts of Product Engineering practices - continuous experimentation, north star metrics, and team autonomy - to create extraordinary products that deliver real value to customers, and what sets them apart from the competition.
