Embodying (dis)trust: 3 large group activities to experience the pleasures and perils of collective work (Tentative)

How do trust, collaboration and self-organization relate if at all? How does it really feel to distrust someone? Does unilateral trust exist?

No matter the size of the group, we'll manage to play 3 incredibly powerful games that allow the group to reflect on some of the basic tenets of any agile endeavor.

  • The chocolates game! Roughly based on game-theory, group gets divided into teams, a line is drawn on the floor and...the game starts! During each round, every team has to choose a representative and a decision: to jump or not to jump. Several combinations have different results. Many juicy conclusions come up during debrief: productive self-organization depends on collaboration, which depends on trust, which depends on alignment, which depends on transparency!
  • The hypnotist -> a game by the great Augusto Boal, adapted to experience the transition between vertical and horizontal structures. Plus an embodied experience of how pair-programming should feel like!!! Awesome debrief, incredibly energetic, people love it.
  • The vampire of Strasbourg -> yet another game adapted from the awesome "Games for actors and non-actors" by theater-of-the-oppressed famed Boal. It's dark in Strasbourg, a vampire comes to town, everybody wants to run away...wait, everyone? If we follow Boal's definition of oppression (monologue where there should be dialog), how many of us are actually oppressed at work? And how do oppressed individuals react when they finally reach power?
